Adam Sender is a fine arts collector. In particular, he formerly owned one of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary art in existence. He recently delivered his entire 700 plus pieces onto the open market. The largest, most prestigious auction houses in the world are tasked with dispersing the collection. To do this, they have taken the pieces on tour throughout the country. I did not think that a collection could generate this much interest. I have always loved contemporary art as a genre, but its following is kind of tepid throughout the general public. I think that it derives its main audience in other artists, intellectuals and art connoisseurs. This was true until this collection was released. Sender is also a noted investor. He knew the value of an undervalued product and how to promote the product thereby increasing its value exponentially. However, he did also have an incredible insight for great art.

The term contemporary art refers to the art that was produced throughout the middle of the last century. This era was known as a very forward time as it was also known as the modern period. The terms can be ambiguous though. We know that the present day is modern and that current art is contemporary. However, in reference to these movements, art and design furniture was also denoted as an era in which the common person felt that the modern age had arrived, and the art at the time reflected the contemporary, modern thought process of the people of this era. Achievements in society ushered this modern feeling into being. The Second World War had ended, and man was achieving things like space flight and landing successfully on the moon. Everything invented at the time had to reflect this mood. Even cars had large fins that resembled rockets from the space age as the era was also referred to as at the time.

Contemporary art is specific to that time as mid-century modern is to the décor of the time even though they are neither contemporary nor modern currently. However, it does offer them both the artistic element of time. How time in the present and past tenses are reflected in art pieces must be considered in all good art. The contemporary movement reflected everyday life, but in an artistic method that denotes time. It is hard to explain, and I have a hard time explaining it to my students, but I then ask them to look at a contemporary art piece and explain why the automatically knew that the painting was painted in a prior time. This is the essence of displaying time, and in fact, timelessness in a painting or a piece of art.
