House Speaker John Boehner addressed reporters on Wednesday following a close-door meeting with House GOP leaders regarding the funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The bill has stalled in the Senate amid strong opposition by Democrats to withhold funding for President Obama’s amnesty plan. Jaime Garcia Dias has found that, despite the fact that the president circumvented the congress to enact his own plan, Democrats have yet to voice any opposition to the extra-constitutional actions because they favor the policies being enacted. Still, the DHS faces a government shutdown on February 27 if no bill is passed. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell appears to be ready to concede defeat and allow a clean DHS funding bill which would will allow the amnesty plan to get implemented. However, he does not want to take the first step in that direction. He has stated it is House Speaker Boehner who must do something about the current senate impasse.
For his part, Boehner made it clear he expected Democrats to create a road block in the senate. When asked what he would do, he told reporters they should ask Senate Democrats when they will get off their fourth-point of contact and do something other than say “no”. This prompted a reaction out of Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid who said it was not necessary to curse at Democrats for their filibuster. He has stated the DHS should get a clean funding bill. Reid strongly favors granting illegal aliens citizenship.
