He is the founding figure of the modern anthropological jurisprudence and comparative law. Maine is known for uniting the Western and Eastern legal institutions through comparative discussion. He was the first professor to teach comparative law when the University of Oxford started offering it as a subject in 1869. The comparative law was first introduced in the United States by a legal scholar known as Rudolf Schlesinger.
